Summary
The Safety Specialist will be responsible for the coordination and administration of the Safety Programs for all of the Olen & Area Aggregates facilities to ensure compliance with Corporate and plant Safety Policies and state and federal regulations. This position reports to the Operations Manager.

This position will reside at the Olen corporate office in Columbus, Ohio.

Responsibilities

  • Administers Company Safety Program, and monitors compliance with company policies and procedures and state and federal legislation and regulations.

  • Contributes to, and lead the development, organization, and implementation of both the company and business unit level safety and health policies, procedures, communication tools, and training programs.

  • Conducts and documents quarterly safety audits, including compliance inspections of facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Is the primary driver in development and implementation of a Joint Safety and Health Team.

  • Provides analysis of safety and health audits, inspection, observation and incident data to the company’s management team to effectively drive continuous improvement.

  • Provides technical and regulatory updates to management to ensure continue compliance with regulatory requirements that concern employee safety and health.

  • Assists in developing, locating and administering Company Safety & Health training programs, to include new hire orientation, On-the-Job (OJT) Training and Job Safety Analysis Training.

  • Ensures that all employees, visitors, and contractors are properly trained in job hazards and safe work practices.

  • Maintains accurate recordkeeping of safety compliance and employee training and takes action to ensure that information is accurately stated and maintained in the safety management system.

  • Assistance and representation to regulatory inspectors and agencies (i.e., MSHA, DOT, EPA, others) as needed to protect the interests of the company.
  • Maintains current listing of material Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for controlled products used on the plant sites.

  • Provides oversight and guidance on the purchase and maintenance of safety equipment.

  • Provides support to corporate insurance department personnel in the management of incidents and potential loss.

 

Skills Required

  • Possess a four (4) year Bachelor’s degree in safety and health or equivalent combinations of technical training and experience.

  • Five (5) plus years of experience with safety and health in the mining industry is preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations as well as other state/federal safety regulations and company safety policies/procedures.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal skills and experience as a trainer.

  • Demonstrated experience in skill sets such as problem solving, creativity, strategic thinking, and decision making.

  • Excellent organization skills and the ability to independently prioritize.

  • Ability to think independently, communicate thoroughly and influence the implementation of the appropriate corrective and preventative actions.

  • Ability to teach, mentor, and lead.

  • Strives in a fast pace, team-oriented workplace.

  • Ability to make independent judgments to manage and facilitate company programs/policies as they relate to the safety of our work.

  • Ability to positively interact and influence front line supervisors and field personnel to create a safe work environment.

  • Accurate record keeping and ability to prepare reports and analysis.

  • Experience in industrial hygiene sampling and computation.

  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office products, ViewPoint and SharePoint software experience a plus.
